Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

   Metal Gear Solid is a third person stealth action video game developed by Kojima Productions exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Guns of the Patriots is the latest addition to the Metal Gear series and was directed by Hideo Kojima, Shuyo Murata and Yoji Shinkawa. The game's worldwide release on June 12, 2008 is ten years after the release of Metal Gear Solid and twenty years after the US release of Metal Gear.  The game has received wide-spread critical acclaim, garnering Game of the Year awards from several major gaming publications, including Gamespot, which hailed the game as technically flawless. As of December 31, 2008 more than 4.5 million copies have been sold worldwide. 

    When you play this game you feel apart of the huge power struggle that is pushing you to the brink.  I could not put down the game and when I finally reached the end I was sad that the game was over.  I look forward to many replays.  

What comes with the PlayStation3?

  We all know the extensive specifications of the PlayStation 3.  The Cell Broadband Engine CPU,RSX GPU, 256MB XDR Main RAM, 256MB GDDR3 VRAM,  2.5" Serial ATA upgradable hard drive,  Wi-Fi, Ethernet,  integrated Blu-Ray player and the list goes on.

     Let’s get beyond the specs, shall we.  The hook up was pretty straight forward.  I used the HDMI cable which carries both the video and audio in one connection and the power cable.  There is a long list of games and content for the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which I will get to in the future.   I wanted to mainly talk about the console itself and the content that is with the PlayStation 3 (PS3) when you unboxed it. 

     The PlayStation 3 (PS3) comes with one controller that is partially charged.  There is a mini to standard usb cable included for charging the controller.  A note: you have to connect the controller to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) with the usb cable the first time.  This allows the PlayStation 3 (PS3) to identify the controller in the future and if you go to your friends house you will have to do the same thing with his PlayStation 3 (PS3).  Now that we are up and running.  The user interface is straight forward. Go left to the setting and right towards the games and internet.  The PlayStation 3 (PS3) will search the wireless or wired networks, depending on you situation, for pictures, video and music.  This content has to be on a shared drive on your network, it can not be secured content and can only be one folder down.  The PlayStation 3 (PS3) won’t see content on a network in a subfolder just the top folder.  Once you have loaded on your favorite content there is some nice software that you have called Photo Gallery that will create a variety of slideshows while playing some of your favorite tunes.  Over on the right side of the row of icons is the PlayStation Network.  At the PlayStation  Home you can create an avatar and meet up with friends or make friends in a virtual town center.  There are games and activities as well as shopping.  There is also the PlayStation Store which is pretty self explanatory.  There is also a program called Life with PlayStation which is a program that puts your  PlayStation 3 (PS3) to work contributing to Stanford University and their distributed computing network.  Instead of having one supercomputer crunching all the numbers on some proteins, for the next several years, they send out small bits of the numbers to be crunched and have the PS3s do the heavy lifting and then reassemble all the compiled parts.  They recommend that you let it run for 8 hour straight so it can finish the block of work. 

    There are several ways that the PlayStation 3 (PS3) can be configured adding a keyboard, a mouse, a printer and you can even load a Linux based Operating System called Yellow Tail.  The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a versatile piece of equipment and it is fun to use.
